Mike Genovese, CFP Mike Genovese, CFP®

Financial Advisor and Founding Partner

Mike is the pilot of our wealth management services. Specifically, he manages our model portfolios, determining the asset allocation and mix of mutual funds and/or ETFs used to implement our various strategies. Before co-founding GBB in 1987, Mike was an independent financial planner and a registered principal and registered representative with Equitec Financial Group. During his tenure, Equitec was the largest independent financial planning firm in the country. Mike is a member of the Sacramento Estate Planning Council, the Western Pension Benefits Conference, and the Northern California Financial Planning Association. He is also a long-time trustee as well as vice chairman of Mercy Foundation. He recently ended a decade-long tour of duty on the Crocker Art Museum board and continues to serve on various committees. Mike received BS degrees in chemistry, biology, and journalism from San Diego State University (SDSU) and completed coursework with an emphasis in finance at the SDSU Graduate School of Business.
Lon Burford, CFA, AIF Lon Burford, CFP®, AIF®

Financial Advisor and Founding Partner

Lon Burford, a founding partner of the firm, offers 31 years of hands-on, objective experience advising individuals and retirement plans on investment management issues. He has worked through several major market upswings as well as several major downturns, contributing to his ability to bring substance to the investment decision-making process. Lon is the partner in charge of the retirement plan asset management business where he oversees the relationships with approximately 100 employer sponsored retirement plans. Services offered include plan design, Investment Policy Statement development, investment menu selection, quarterly performance and risk monitoring, fiduciary monitoring functions, and employee education programs. He also advises a number of individual investment and planning clients. Prior to GBB, Lon was a financial advisor from 1980 through 1987. He is a member of the Western Pension Benefits Conference; the American Funds Advisory Council; and the Investment Committee of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, where he is also chair of the Finance Council. He is a past board member of the Boy Scouts of America, River City District, and past board president of the Board of Trustees of the Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento. Lon was graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UC Davis with a BA in economics.

Kelly Brothers Kelly Brothers

Kelly Brothers, who became a GBB partner in 2007, is not only a specialist in asset management but also a well-respected business reporter for KCRA and KFBK. Kelly joined GBB from Smith Barney, where he was a financial advisor. Earlier he was the evening news anchor at KCRA Channel 3 (NBC) as well as a radio show host with NewsTalk 1530 KFBK. His broadcast experience provides him with a powerful way to promote successful local businesses as well as sound, time-tested financial planning practices. In fact, he delivers all his reports from a fully functional news studio inside the GBB office. A dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, Kelly was named Volunteer of the Year by the Mercy Foundation, Father of the Year by the Center for Fathers and Families, and twice named News Anchor of the Year by the Sacramento Bee. Kelly is perhaps the most in-demand emcee of charitable events in Sacramento, hosting more than 50 each year. His current focus is Cristo Rey High School, a new model of values-based, college-prep education for low-income students. He is also chair of the investment committee of the Sacramento Catholic Foundation and the advance gifts chair of the Our Lady of Assumption Capital Campaign. Kelly holds a BA and an MBA in international business from Notre Dame and did post-graduate work at the London School of Business.

Alex Brown, CPA, CFP Alex Brown, CPA, CFP®

Financial Advisor and Partner

Alex Brown is the firm's administrative partner, overseeing the wealth management services with Mike Genovese. Before joining the firm in 2004, he served as a senior financial analyst with Hewlett Packard and a business consultant with Arthur Andersen. His background in public accounting and as an analyst has provided him with the analytical skills to uncover and evaluate investment opportunities. It has also exposed him to tax-related issues that cross over to the tax planning solutions he provides his clients. Alex is a member of the Sacramento Estate Planning Council, the Estate Planning Committee for the California Society of CPAs, and the Financial Planning Association. He actively participates in the 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy campaign, a volunteer effort of the nation's certified public accountants to help Americans understand their personal finances and develop money management skills. He is also a board member of the Sacramento Chapter for the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, an executive officer of the Boy's Scouts of America Troop 863, and a youth leader in his church. He received a BS and a MS in accounting from Brigham Young University.
